Coastal Construction
Building in a coastal environment is different from building inland. Wind speeds are typically higher in coastal areas and require stronger engineered building connections and more closely spaced nailing of building sheathing, siding and roof shingles. Wind driven salt water, corrosion and decay drive material choices and require more maintenance and upkeep. Flood levels, velocities and wave action in coastal areas also make coastal flooding more dangerous than inland flooding. Foundations must also be designed and built to withstand coastal erosion which can undermine the structure.
